International Model Power Boat Association

History of D13

District XIII includes South Carolina & Georgia. Created in 1996, we have held a  High Point Championship series each year crowning District Champions at the end of the season. We have two major races.  Our biggest event is the Spring Nationals in Atlanta, GA held each year in April. This race has 200+ boats entered each year attracting racers from all over the country and has sold out months in advance the past two seasons. The Twin Hydro Shootout is the featured class at this race. We also host the National Outboard Tunnel Championships in Walterboro, SC. This race attracts top tunnel racers from all over the world and draws around 100 tunnel boats each year.

In 2001 a four race Grand Prix series focused on the gas boats was created with open water on Saturday morning and racing starting at noon. The two-day format with limited classes makes for smaller races while maintaining a good level of competition. This series awards the class winners with a GP Champion’s Jacket.

The District has a total of six clubs. Two clubs, the East Cooper Model Club and the Charleston Model Boaters, hosts of the Tunnel Championships, are in South Carolina. Georgia is home to our other four clubs, the Atlanta Model Boaters, host of the 1991 Internats, 2003 Gas Nats and the annual Spring Nationals race, the SOWEGA Model Boaters, Ogeechee R/C Modelers and the Valdosta Model Boat Club, host of the annual Speed Week record trial.
